The HP LaserJet P1006 is a monochrome laser printer designed for the personal user. It has decent print speeds and good quality, but it doesn't have as much to offer for the price as competing products.
The HP P1006 is a very compact printer, just like the LaserJet P1005 toner printer. It measures just 7.6 inches by 13.7 inches by 8.8 inches (HWD) and weighs only 10.3 pounds. It will fit in even the smallest spaces, and is about the size of a large inkjet printer. Its compact size comes with a few tradeoffs, and one of them is smaller than average paper capacity. It holds only 150 sheets in its main tray, though it does also have a 10-sheet multipurpose tray for alternate media. A multipurpose tray is an uncommon feature for a budget personal laser, so it is a nice bonus. The printer doesn't include networking in its standard configuration, but wired or wireless networking options are both available as upgrades, although they are a bit expensive. Toner is also on the expensive side, resulting in a fairly high cost of ownership. In fact, many models with a higher upfront cost have lower toner costs, which will result in less money over the long run, a serious point to consider.
The LaserJet P1006 is easy to set up. Simply unpack, install HP toner cartridge, load paper, install the software, and connect the USB cable when the software prompts you. Unfortunately, the setup and instructions and user manual are all located on the software disc. This is probably an attempt at being a green solution, but many users like to have a printed manual for a printer. Print quality is good, but not great. Text is generally sharp, though it loses some detail at very small font sizes.
Overall, the HP LaserJet P1006 is a good printer, but competing models offer more for the money, and for just a little more money, and have more economical toner prices, which will save money over the long run.
