The HP LaserJet P1003 may be a laser printer, but it takes aim at home users and the small office with its compact design and friendly, rounded aesthetics. It keeps the power, features and cost-effective HP P1003 toner, but it is easier to use, making it suitable to beginners and less-experienced users. Print speed is up to 14 pages per minute on A4-sized media, and the running cost of printer toner is low enough to trim a buyer's budget.
The P1003 is essentially designed as a single-user model, as it includes just a USB 2.0 port for connectivity. That is not to say that it couldn't be connected to a network with either a host computer to handle sharing, or a network adapter. With a 150-sheet paper capacity, it couldn't easily handle a lot of users, but for a small shared home environment or an office of only a few users, it would do quite well.
The price of toners can have a big effect on the long-term value of a printer, and HP P1003 toner cartridges are quite affordable. The capacity of the LaserJet P1003 toner cartridges is a bit limited, at 1,500 pages, but using compatible LaserJet P1003 toner will make for a better cost per page.
When compared to other models in its class, the P1003 doesn't have any standout features to put it above the competition, but it is a very capable and easy to use device, and a good value for the price. Economical HP P1003 toner is also a bonus, though some models offer a lower cost per page.
For home users who want to step up to laser quality and speed, the HP P1003 makes a good entry point. It is simple to use, and provides excellent quality, as long as the lack of color isn't an issue.

The LaserJet P1003 is rated for speeds of up to 15 pages per minute, but has a compact design that is well-suited for home use. Its affordable price will save users money, and supplies are very easy to replace. It connects via USB port, but lacks networking features.
Start with the printer on, and raise the output paper tray at the top to make room for the access panel. Raise the access panel and look for the HP P1003 toner cartridge inside the opening. Grab it by the handle in the center and pull it up and out of the machine.
Open the box for the new LaserJet P1003 toner cartridge and remove it from the packing materials, then carefully open and remove the bag. Rock the cartridge back and forth 6 or 7 times to loosen up any settled toner from shipping.
Your replacement P1003 cartridge comes with a piece of paper that protects the drum. Pull it in the direction of the arrows before you install it. You will also need to remove the shipping tape by looping one finger in the end and pulling it straight out.
Align the HP P1003 cartridge with the guides on either side and allow it to slide downward into place, pressing firmly to make sure it is seated properly. Close the access panel to complete the installation.
You are now ready to resume printing with your LaserJet P1003 laser printer.
