The HP Deskjet F4492 can handle scanning, copying, and printing, as an all-in-one color inkjet printer, but it is not particularly great at any of these tasks. It does offer solid print speeds of up to 28 pages per minute for black and 22 pages per minute for color, but its output quality is not as sharp as some of the competition, and it is expensive to use due to the cost of replacement HP F4492 printer ink.
Buyers who want a small machine for desktop use should be mostly pleased with the F4492. It measures 6.4 inches high and 17.2 inches wide, but it has a depth of 22 inches when the tray is extended, taking up valuable desk space. It weighs only 11 pounds without the Deskjet F4492 ink installed, however, so it could be easily moved out of the way when it isn't in use.
The control panel does a fairly good job of managing copying tasks, but printing and scanning are best left to the included software. The HP Smart Web Printing software is a nice feature, as it can help strip out unwanted elements from a web page before printing, conserving HP F4492 ink and maybe even extra paper.
Replacing printer ink can be a costly affair. With capacities of only 165 pages for the standard tricolor supply and 200 pages for the standard black Deskjet F4492 ink cartridge, the cost per page is higher than most in its class. High-capacity HP F4492 ink cartridges can offer up to 440 pages for color and 600 pages for black.
It's not that the HP F4492 inkjet printer is a bad model, by any means, but buyers can pay a little extra and get a much more full-featured device, complete with networking capabilities and better output quality. Add in the high running costs, and the F4492 just isn't a good value.
