The HP Deskjet F4185 is an inkjet printer with decent print speeds and high quality. Though recently discontinued, it can still be found on the internet new and used for purchase, and its HP F4185 ink is easy to find and replace. Compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, it will be a good addition to any small or home office with minimal printing needs. However, due to its expensive Deskjet F4185 ink and its slow speeds, it wouldn't work for a larger sized office. Though it can print, scan and copy, it's lacking one feature many businesses can't do without—faxing capabilities.
Though it may be limiting in those aspects, it is versatile in others. Most standard paper sizes are compatible with the F4185—including letter, executive and legal. Envelopes, transparencies, labels, cards and photos can all be printed from this inkjet unit as well.
Two HP F4185 ink cartridges are needed in this unit—one holding black printer ink and one holding color. The standard black HP F4185 ink can yield 165 pages, while the color yields 190 pages. However, higher yielding versions of the same cartridges are available. If the buyer chooses to, they can purchase a third, optional photo Deskjet F4185 ink cartridge. When in use, this tank takes the place of the black ink.
When printing in exclusively black printer ink, up to 20 pages can be printed or copied per minute. In color, only 14 pages will print or copy per minute. Though these aren't great speeds, they are decent for an aged machine. The highest possible resolution is 1200x2400 dpi, which is relatively high quality.
Though this lacks many features a large business may need, small businesses and homes alike can benefit from the HP F4185. The replacement ink is a little costly, but third party vendors sell the same products remanufactured for a much more affordable price, making the Deskjet F4185 a viable option for many.
