The HP Photosmart D7160 ink printer uses thermal inkjet printing technology to produce excellent text prints and above average photo prints. At $150 and a monthly duty cycle of 3000 pages, it is a machine the casual home user can seriously consider. If two-sided printing is important for you, you can purchase the duplexing accessory separately. Printer resolution for monochrome prints is 1200 dpi x 1200 dpi. If you are a photography enthusiast then you should be willing to put in a little more cash for other models such as the D7360.

The HP D7160 ink cartridge printer measures 18.2 x 15.2 x 6.8 in and weighs 17 lbs. It offers wired connectivity via a USB interface and supports PictBridge for direct printing. You can get prints speeds of up to 32 pages and 31 pages for monochrome and color prints, respectively. A built-in color LCD screen measuring 2.4 in lets you view images before taking printouts. You can also capture still photos from video images. The panel of media card readers accepts Microdrive, Memory Stick, MultiMediaCard, SD Memory Card, xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick Duo, and other cards. However, some cards may require an adapter to be read. The printer suffers from a minor drawback of being unable to print bordered photos when printing from memory cards. The HP D7160 inkjet cartridge printer uses six cartridges of HP Vivera Inks. The CMYK color scheme is followed; the colors used are cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan, and light magenta.

The input tray can hold up to 100 sheets of paper; the dedicated photo paper tray holds 4 x 6 photo paper. The Photosmart D7160 can handle an impressive array of media such as cards, labels, envelopes, index cards, photo paper, plain paper, greeting cards, and transparencies. The printer works with both Mac and Windows operating systems.

The HP Photosmart D7160 inkjet printer runs the Photosmart Premier software which facilitates easy saving, printing, and emailing of photos. Overall, the machine is well-suited for those with intermittent use for a printing machine.
