The HP Deskjet D1668 inkjet printer is one of the most affordable on the market, and certainly designed for entry-level home use, but it does an adequate job for the price. Its speeds are fairly slow, averaging around 4 pages per minute in tests, but print quality is pretty solid, and high-capacity Deskjet D1668 printer ink is available to keep it affordable.
This D1668 is extremely compact, with a front tray that folds up out of the way and a semi-glossy black design that blends in nicely without drawing too much attention. It measures 6.2x17x7.8 inches, and even with the HP D1668 ink installed, it weighs just 4.9 pounds.
One of the compromises to its low price and small frame is that the output tray puts paper nearly right on top of the input paper, and there is no protection for input sheets, so it might be best to remove them in between uses. It still works fairly well, however, and with an input capacity of only 80 sheets, users would be replenishing fairly often in any case.
The device has only one USB port for connecting to a computer, and it lacks features like duplexing, but this is hardly surprising given its low price. Memory card slots would have been a nice addition, however.
OEM printer ink is a little expensive, and the small capacities of HP D1668 ink cartridges don't help the cost per page much. Thankfully, remanufactured HP D1668 ink is available from third-party vendors at better prices. Add to that the availability of high-capacity Deskjet D1668 ink cartridges, and users also want have to order replacements quite as often.
Buyers won't get much more than the most basic functionality from the Deskjet D1668, but its ultra-low price still makes it appealing for college students or as a second inkjet printer in the home. More features and better speeds can be found for just a little more money, however.
