In the printing world, a lot of devices are introduced every year for general purposes and use. Some lean more towards office work and some could possibly be considered personal printers, but all are ultimately interchangeable. Rarely are there inkjet printers made for a single-purpose. Rarely is something built with one type of consumer in mind, rendering a machine useless to so many others. Well, the HP DesignJet ColorPro GA was made specifically for graphic designers.
Though it was discontinued years ago considering it was released in the 90s, it is still one of the more expensive printers out there. If an unused ColorPro GA can be found, it could cost up to $2,500, though used options will cost much less. This inkjet unit is not for amateurs. Only professional graphic-designers or architects would spend this kind of money to provide the most conceptual proofs possible.
There are four DesignJet ColorPro GA ink cartridges in this printer--they are black, cyan, magenta and yellow. These color printer ink tanks can yield 1,650 pages, and the black can yield 1,750 pages. Using the black HP ColorPro GA ink, 9 pages per minute can be produced, while 7 pages can be printed in color printer ink.
For such an expensive machine, one would think that the resolutions would be out of this world; however, the maximum resolution using either color of DesignJet ColorPro GA ink is only 600x600 dpi. This is mildly disappointing, but the precision and execution of this unit are what makes it desirable. Also, the fact that it has a 400-sheet input tray, quick-drying HP ColorPro GA ink and a built-in 4 MB RAM that is expandable to 68 MB are solid features. It is also compatible with Windows and Mac.
Replacement HP ColorPro GA ink cartridges can be found new from the manufacturer or remanufactured from third party vendors for much less money.
