The HP 5500 is a color LaserJet printer that produces high quality text and color output in a timely manner, making it ideal for office and personal use. The 5500 comes standard with 96MB of memory and a 400 MHz processor. However, other configurations have additional features for higher capacity printing. The HP 5500n is nearly identical to the 5500, but comes network ready, which means it works with an Ethernet based print server. The 5500dn includes these same features as well as an auto-duplexer. The top of the line version is the 5500hdn which has nearly twice the RAM (160MB) and an additional 500 sheet feeder, and the 5500dtn which is identical to the 5500hdn but with an internal hard drive.
The HP 5500 has a special printing process known as "direct to page" which transfers the toner directly to the page, enhancing the print quality. The color output of this printer is crisp and precise, though not always ideal for high capacity photo image printing. Another nice feature on the 5500 is its ability to print color pages just as quickly as black text pages. Print speeds can be up to 21 pages per minute at 600 x 600 dpi resolution. Though the HP 5500 is above average among other printers in its class for speed, it tends to be costly per page. Every print, regardless of whether or not it is a color print or black and white, uses all four HP 5500 toner cartridges. This of course causes the toner cartridges to require replacement more frequently. Replacements for the 5500 toner are available using part numbers C9731A (cyan), C9732A (yellow), C9733A (magenta), and C9730A (black).
This HP 5500 is reliable for almost all office and personal usage, however due to the vertical alignment of the imaging units, the 5500 stands about twice as high as competitive machines. Though the speed of this printer is a significant improvement over its predecessor, the HP 8500 series, it is slower than its main competitors such as the Okidata 9300 and the Xerox Phaser 7300.
