The HP Deskjet 840C is a simple, single purpose color printer. Slightly outdated, this unit can only print up to 8 pages per minute (ppm) using black HP 840C ink, 5 ppm with mixed text and graphics and 1.4 ppm for a page in full color printer ink. The slow speed makes its functionality in an office environment virtually useless. However, home users will find it satisfactory for school projects or web printing.
The Deskjet 840C is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. It houses a parallel port and a USB connection. With this unit, you get multiple options for types of paper, including plain, inkjet, transparency and specialty photo, among others. It is the HP Color Layering Technology that makes it possible for the 840C to print lab-quality documents and color images on just about any paper.
Using the drop-on-demand thermal inkjet printing system, HP 840C ink is dispensed in tiny droplets onto the page, forming thousands of dots that ultimately make up the appropriate colors. There are only 2 HP Deskjet 840C ink cartridges, one with black and the other with tricolor printer ink. HP Colorsmart ensures that the colors on the printed page will be completely true to the original. The black HP 840C ink cartridge has a page yield of 500, while the color tank only reaches 410.
There are many reasons why the 840C makes a better home companion than a cubicle mate. There is no networking or multifunction features. The output rate requires patience, possibly due to the minuet 2 MB of memory. The monthly duty cycle is only 1,000 pages. Cost of replacing Deskjet 840C ink is higher than the actual printer. Very simple, low-volume printing needs are best suited for this unit.
