For buyers who want a simple photo inkjet printer and occasional direct printing options, the HP Photosmart 7838 could be a good fit. It is compact enough for the home, has reasonably fast speeds of up to 22 pages per minute, and supports a wide range of media types and sizes. Two sizes of HP 7838 printer ink supplies offer more control over costs.
Sharing a desk with the 7838 won't be a concern. It measures just 6.2x18.3x9.1 inches, and weighs less than 10 pounds. The trays can be folded up out of the way when it is not in use, conserving valuable space.
The unit comes only with a USB port for connection to a Mac or PC, but a PictBridge port and memory card slots are available for direct photo printing. With a small monochrome LCD screen, however, users will have to browse photos by number without image previews. Multiple printing modes are available, such as Draft mode which prioritizes speed and conserves Photosmart 7838 printer ink, and Best mode which offers the highest quality.
The main tray maxes out at 100 sheets of plain paper, which should be adequate for light home use. The output tray can hold 50 sheets, and it is placed right above the input tray, resulting in a U-bend paper path that can be somewhat prone to paper jams.
The main HP 7838 ink cartridges are the black and tricolor supplies. Two other optional Photosmart 7838 ink cartridges can be used, however. One is Photo Color and the other is Photo Gray. The Photo Color HP 7838 ink enhances the color palette of photos, while the Photo Gray gives better results when printing black-and-white images.
The Photosmart 7838 inkjet printer won't win awards for speed or print quality, but it does an adequate job considering the price. Its direct printing options are handy, and its support for multiple media types gives it flexibility.
