There are some electronic devices that are reliable and durable and will last for years and years—the HP Deskjet 712 is one of those machines. Released in the 90s, this discontinued inkjet printer is still a good fit for consumers with basic printing needs. It does not have multiple functions like most all-in-one units that are found in offices, and it cannot support wireless connections or networking. However, for someone who wants to print decent photos and graphics and simple text documents, the 712 works just fine.
With a 1,000 page monthly duty cycle, high volume printing is not possible with this inkjet unit—especially considering only 6 pages per minute can be printed using black HP 712 ink and 3 pages per minute in color. With speeds like that, printing large documents will take weeks! If printing photos, keep in mind this unit does not have very high resolutions. The Deskjet 712 ink can only reach 600x600 dpi in black or color.
Each HP 712 ink cartridge has an attached nozzle that dispenses the printer ink onto the page in very small dots. This system is known as drop-on-demand. Also featured is PhotoREt II and ColorSmart II technologies, both working together to provide the most crisp text and vivid images possible and keeping them true to the original. Deskjet 712 ink cartridges are simple to replace. Just open the top cover, and the printer ink tanks will automatically move to the center and can be quickly released by a green lever.
Connected only by parallel port and able to print on plain paper along with envelopes and index cards, the Deskjet 712 is not the most versatile of printers. However, it is low maintenance fits most budgets, thanks to the minimal cost of replacing HP 712 ink. Reliable and compact, simple home users will love this printer.
