The HP LaserJet 6P is a monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office environment. Its speeds are a bit slow, but its excellent print quality makes it worth a look. Lack of a USB port may be a problem for some users. Also, consumers that need to be able to print in color should look at the Oki C5100 which features Okidata 42127401 toner.
The LaserJet 6P is a fairly compact printer. It measures 7.87 inches by 15.75 inches by 17.52 inches and weighs 24 pounds. It won't fit in extremely tight spaces, but would not be considered bulky by any means. Its paper capacity is very good for its class, with a main tray of 250 sheets and a multipurpose tray of 100 sheets. Its main tray can handle many different sizes of paper up to legal size.
One of the printer's main shortcomings is the lack of a USB port. It has only a parallel port available. Adapters are available for converting from parallel to USB, however, and also for converting from parallel to ethernet, which would allow the 6P to connect directly to a network for sharing among multiple users. The HP 6P is somewhat limited on memory, with only 2 MB of memory installed. This can be upgraded to a maximum of 16 MB.
HP LaserJet 6P toner cartridges have a capacity of 4,000 pages, which falls short of competing products such as HP CE255X toner. Using third-party compatible HP 6P toner cartridges, rather than the more expensive branded HP 6P toner cartridges can result in a much lower cost per page, reducing the cost of ownership. The HP LaserJet 6P toner is able to print in 120 shades of gray enabling the printing of photo quality graphics.
Print quality is the real standout feature of the 6P. Text is exceptionally sharp and dark. Graphics quality is average for a laser. Print speed is a little on the slow side, at 8 pages per minute. This will likely be fast enough for home users and small office users, however.
Overall, the HP LaserJet 6P provides excellent print quality, despite slow printing speeds and lack of connectivity options. Competing models that print with color have more graphics, such as those using Dell 310-5731 toner, but many can't match the 6P's all-around quality.
