The HP Deskjet 682 is a basic single-purpose inkjet printer. It was designed for low-volume printing, mainly in homes and small offices. However, this unit is outdated and would be virtually irrelevant for modern businesses. These days, work groups require multi-functioning devices that are capable of networking. The 682 would be a turtle in a hare's world.
Printing at speeds as slow as 5 pages per minute using black HP 682 ink and less than 2 pages per minute in color, most people do not have the patience for a unit this slow. Even though the quality of documents is still considered acceptable, the lack of efficiency is a big downfall. One of the better features, the color photo printing, takes approximately 4 minutes to produce a single photo or graphic image using HP 682 ink.
With only 2 Deskjet 682 ink cartridges, the resolutions of the final products are not bad, but not necessarily good. Black printer ink has a resolution of 600 dpi, while the color HP 862 ink can only conjure 300 dpi. Dpi means "dots per inch", which is determined by how many dots of Deskjet 682 ink come through the nozzles on the printhead per inch of paper. The drop-on-demand thermal inkjet technology was once considered innovative, but has since been surpassed by newer technologies.
There is an optional HP 682 ink cartridge available for this unit as well. It is a special photo tank intended to enhance colors and make more realistic photos. To install, the black printer ink has to be removed. Replacement tanks can be pricey but easy to find online.
All in all, the HP Deskjet 682 is a reliable machine for low-volume use. It has the durability to last a while, but lacks the features to truly be of service to most users.
