Small in size and capacity, the HP Deskjet 640 (sometimes referred to as the 640C) is a low-volume inkjet printer. It offers a monthly duty cycle of only 1,000 pages, and is mediocre in both speed and quality. Though it can be used as a desktop printer in a small office, it is best suited for a home with occasional printing needs. It connects to a computer via USB or parallel port, and both Windows and Mac operating systems are supported. A network adapter can be purchased to make the 640 shareable, but it is not recommended, given its limited capacity.
To reach the optimum speed, users will have to sacrifice a bit of quality. There are three different print modes: Draft, Normal, and Best. The maximum resolution that can be reached in Best mode is 600x600 dpi, but the speed will max out at about 1 page per minute in black-and-white and 0.5 pages per minute with color. In Draft mode, less HP 640 ink is used per print, increasing the speed to 6 pages per minute in black-and-white and 3 pages per minute in color, but this reduces the overall quality.
HP provides a power cord, user's guide, a package of photo paper, a setup poster, and two Deskjet 640 ink cartridges. There are actually four colors of printer ink that are used, however. The cyan, magenta, and yellow HP 640 ink are held in different compartments of a tricolor supply, while the other supply only holds black. The input paper tray holds only 100 sheets, but can handle multiple media types, such as glossy paper, photo paper, envelopes, and more.
It is quite easy to find replacement printer ink, as a number of vendors have it readily available online. The tricolor HP 640 ink cartridge can yield up to 350 pages and the black supply can yield about 500 pages, which should last a while if this unit is used for occasional inkjet printing only. If the OEM versions seem a bit pricey, compatible Deskjet 640 ink is sold by third-party vendors at a reduced price.
The print quality and speeds of the HP 640 are not overly impressive, but it could still make a good choice for home users. Its supplies are affordable, and it is compact enough to fit on a desktop easily, which will be nice benefit in tight spaces.
