The HP Deskjet 5552 inkjet printer isn't particularly fast, and its output quality is fairly average, but its low price and simple, compact design should still appeal to budget-conscious home users. Its produces 17 pages per minute in FastDraft mode, and it does suffer from high costs for HP 5552 printer ink.
The 5552 is simple from a design standpoint, but very effective. Its boxy design is mostly compact, and the input paper tray is mostly covered, avoiding some of the dust accumulation of similar models. This does mean its input and output trays won't fold inward for a more compact footprint, but having a little more protection for paper is worth the tradeoff. It weighs about 11 pounds, not including the Deskjet 5552 ink cartridges.
When it comes to connection options, users only get a USB and parallel port, though networking can be added as an upgrade option for an additional cost. With such limited speeds and capacity, however, it is certainly better suited for personal use than as a shared inkjet device. A two-sided printing module is also available as upgrade option, but there are models in its class with this feature included for a similar price.
One of the biggest hurdles of owning this machine is the cost of HP 5552 ink cartridges. The OEM versions of Deskjet 5552 printer ink supplies can be very pricey, and adding the optional "photo color" supply for 6-color printing will make it even more expensive to operate. Thankfully, remanufactured HP 5552 ink is available to help trim down expenses.
Overall, there is little about the HP 5552 that is overly impressive, but as a basic personal printer, it will do its job well. Other models in its class do come with more features like networking and duplexing for a similar price, however, so buyers should comparison shop.
