When shopping for many technology products it is often advisable to go for the newest and the fastest. This is not always the case with all products, and the HP LaserJet 4P may be proof of that. Though it doesn't have the fast speeds and robust feature sets of newer printers on the market, it can be a much less expensive option for the buyer who needs sharp text quality with a low operating cost. The main benefit of the HP 4P laser printer may be in the toners. Printer toner can be expensive to replace, but LaserJet 4P toner cartridges are some of the least expensive on the market. The HP 4P toner cartridges have a large capacity for a personal printer, more so than the LaserJet 1320 toner making them a better value on a cost per page basis. Combining the low cost of the printer with the low cost of HP 4P toner adds up to a very low operating cost for the lifetime of the unit. While its 4 pages per minute print speed is on the slow side by today's standards, its true 600 dpi printing resolution produces very sharp prints, especially text. Further, the Resolution Enhancement technology (REt) enhances the quality of prints to simulate a higher resolution. The one major flaw may be its parallel port, as it is the only connection included with the printer. Using either a USB-to-parallel adapter or a network adapter will make it easier to connect to modern computers, however.
While it won't win any awards for speed or features compared to most models on the market such as the HP P2015 toner printer, what it does have is reliability, print quality and inexpensive HP 4P toner. Buyers on a budget should take note, especially if fast speeds are not essential.
