4MP
The HP LaserJet 4MP is a monochrome laser printer designed for the small office or workgroup. It has excellent print quality and Mac compatibility, but slow speeds and limited memory may turn some buyers away.
The HP 4MP adds Mac compatibility to its family of printers, while retaining the same reliability and solid construction one would expect from an HP printer. Although the printer is showing its age, it remains one of the most well-constructed and reliable printers available on the market. It is not very bulky, and can find a place in a small office, even when space is tight.
Paper capacity is quite good for its size and class. The main tray holds 250 sheets, while a second tray can hold up to 100 sheets, depending on the media type. The 4MP's connection options are a bit limited. It can connect either by serial or parallel port. Neither port is very common on modern computers, but an adapter can be used to convert parallel to USB very easily. Furthermore, networking capability can be added with an HP JetDirect card, to easily share the 4MP across a network of computers.
HP LaserJet 4MP toner cartridges are designated with the model number 74A to make them easily identifiable. Each HP 4MP toner cartridge has a capacity of 3,500 pages and is fairly inexpensive. Users can save more money by using third-party compatible cartridges instead of the branded HP LaserJet 4MP toner. The printer can help save money by using its Toner Save mode, reducing the amount of HP 4MP toner used per page.
Print quality is excellent, due to the 4MP's 600 dpi printing engine. Print quality is disappointing, however, at only 4 pages per minute. This will likely be too slow for a lot of users, and doesn't compare well to competing printers with faster speeds for less money.
Overall, the 4MP is an excellent printer, but slow speeds and lack of connectivity options bring down its value, especially in light of better competing models.
