The HP LaserJet 4600 color laser printer is geared toward the small or medium office with high-volume printing needs. The price may be overwhelming to some buyers, but its speed, reliability, and ability to take on very high volumes of printing may make it worth the price. If you do not need high volume printing, consider the HP 1600 toner printer.

There are multiple models available. The 4600 is the base model, the 4600N includes networking, the 4600DN adds duplexing, and the 4600HDN and 4600TN add different configurations of paper capacity and finishing options.

With its included ethernet port, the HP 4600 color laser printer is extremely easy to setup for network sharing, like the HP CM2320 toner printer. Once the unit is connected to the network and configured, it can be located by any computer on the network. There is no need to install additional software on each client computer, and it can be equally detected and installed by Windows and Mac computers. The machine includes an embedded web server which allows client computers to change settings, check status, and manage print jobs from their local computer. The web server can be accessed by a web browser, without the need to install any software.

HP LaserJet 4600 toner cartridges show the unit's high-volume focus, with a capacity of 9,100 pages for the black printer toner cartridge and 8,100 pages for the color laser toner cartridges. With these capacities, it is possible to go a long time without having to change cartridges. It prints pages in one pass, meaning that each color must have its own drum. This contributes greatly to print speed, but results in more expensive cartridges, as each cartridge contains a replacement drum.

Print quality is excellent. Text is extremely sharp, graphics quality is quite good, and photo quality is about average for a laser printer, not great, but passable.

Overall, the HP 4600 will appeal to buyers with high-volume needs who don't mind spending more for capacity and speed. Smaller office users will want to weigh the price against less expensive newer models with lower capacity.
