The HP OfficeJet 4251 all-in-one inkjet can fax and copy without the need for a PC, but its print and scan functions are more than worth connecting it. It can print at speeds of up to 14 pages per minute in black and 10 pages per minute in color, the cost per page of HP 4251 printer ink is fairly low, and print quality is better than expected for such an inexpensive device.
The 4251 is a step up from the average home inkjet, with a little more capacity for higher volume work. It has a maximum monthly duty cycle of 1,500 pages, and high-capacity OfficeJet 4251 printer ink won't need to be replaced as frequently. It certainly won't handle more than a small office, but the extra capacity should appeal to busy users.
The 4251's footprint is fairly compact, measuring 16.4x8 inches, and it is only 7.1 inches high when the document feeder tray is closed. Unfortunately, most users will probably leave the tray open most of the time, as it covers up much of the control panel. The ability to compact the unit when it is not in use is a nice feature, however.
The maximum optical scanning resolution is 600x1200 dpi, but it is totally reliant on the included software. Copying and faxing can be controlled right from the control panel, and up to 100 copies can be made from an original.
Prices for HP 4251 ink cartridges might be a bit higher than expected, but so are the capacities. The high-capacity versions of OfficeJet 4251 ink cartridges can provide up to 400 pages for color and 520 pages for black. With many third-party vendors offering remanufactured HP 4251 ink for lower prices, it can be a very cost-effective machine if users do their research.
Although the OfficeJet 4251 lacks a flatbed scanner and some conveniences like memory card slots, it is a very capable machine for the price. Busy home and small office users will appreciate its ability to handle a little more volume than the average model.
