The HP LaserJet 3800 color laser printer is a relatively compact unit that would fit well in a small or medium office environment, like the HP 1600 toner printer. It includes an ethernet port for simple and quick network sharing setup, and the included 'Toolbox' software allows anyone on the network to manage print jobs and change settings on the fly. With its monthly volume rating of 65,000 pages, it is capable of handling a large volume of printing in a larger office, and has room to grow in the future as needs change.
There are four models available. The 3800 is the base model, the 3800N adds networking, the 3800DN adds duplexing, and the 3800DTN adds extra paper capcity.
Print quality is excellent, especially for text, with sharp edges even down to small font sizes. Color print quality is also very good. Print speed is only average, at 16.5 pages per minute black and 5.5 pages per minute in color.
HP LaserJet 3800 toner cartridges have a capacity of 6,000 pages for black and 4,000 for color. Our equivalent compatible HP toner cartridge will produce the same number of pages but cost 50% less. The costs per page work out to around 2 cents for black and 10 cents for color using OEM cartridges. It is worth noting that each replacement laser toner cartridge includes a new drum unit, covering all the parts that need to be replaced on a regular basis. This is a nice feature as you don't have to replace multiple parts at different times, but just the printer toner cartridges. Costs are similar even to those of less expensive models, such as HP 3600 toner cartridges.
The HP 3800 color laser printer has a good paper capacity for its size. The main drawer holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray holds 100 sheets. There is an optional 500-sheet drawer that can be purchased and attached, so the machine can grow with your needs. Duplex printing is not available in this model, so if that is a necessity, buyers may need to look elsewhere, like the HP 2840 toner printer.
Overall, the HP LaserJet 3800 is a solid networkable laser model that will fill the typical needs of an office environment. Its compact size, great print quality, affordalbe HP toner prices, and decent print speed make it a good choice. Though it may not have any standout features, what it does have is solid performance and reliability.
