With one of the most lightweight and compact designs in its class, one might expect very little from the HP Deskjet 3744 inkjet printer. In fact, it offers fairly solid speeds of up to 14 pages per minute and 1200 dpi output quality that is better than expected for such a low price. Expensive HP 3744 printer ink makes it a bit less appealing for bargain hunters, however.
Buyers won't need to make a lot of room for the 3744, as it measures only 5.6x16.6x7.2 inches. In fact, since the front tray slides inward to reduce its footprint and it weighs only 4.5 pounds without the HP 3744 ink cartridges installed, it is feasible that a user could just store it on a shelf when not in use.
You won't find a lot of buttons or a control panel on such a simple machine, only a single power button. The included software offers a lot of functionality, however, and excellent control over the major features. Multiple quality settings provide different priorities of speed and Deskjet 3744 ink usage, with a maximum resolution of 1200 dpi for producing sharp prints and photos. It connects via USB, but does not include a cable in the box.
Unfortunately, the cost of printer ink really brings down the value of the device. The tricolor supply only provides up to 190 pages, and the black Deskjet 3744 ink cartridge can provide only 220 pages, which means users will likely be replacing them often. Using remanufactured HP 3744 ink will help a little, but it still won't be as cost-effective as some of the competition.
With its ultra-compact design and easy-to-use software, the HP 3744 inkjet is a great bargain for the purchase price. Its speed and output quality are impressive, but high running costs make it a little less appealing.
