Though it is a fairly basic all-in-one inkjet printer, the HP Deskjet 2540 is a good value for its low price. ISO print speeds of 7 pages per minute for black and 4 pages per minute for color aren't the fastest in its class, but prices for Deskjet 2540 printer ink make up for some of its shortcomings with low operating costs.
Despite some of its limitations, the 2540 is quite impressive in its wireless printing support. It can easily connect to an existing wireless network for sharing, and users have a few options for integrating mobile devices for wireless printing. It supports wireless direct printing from Android and other devices, as well as Apple's AirPrint, which makes it quick and easy to print from an iOS device with virtually no setup.
At 9.9 inches high and with a footprint of 16.7x21.7 inches, it takes up a bit more space than some buyers might expect. It weighs only 7.9 pounds, however, even with the HP 2540 printer ink supplies in place, so it is easy to move around. One of the limitations of its compact and affordable design is a small paper capacity, at only 60 sheets. This will probably only negatively affect users who do a lot of printing, however.
As with any printer, the cost of HP 2540 ink will exceed the initial price. Thankfully, Deskjet 2540 ink cartridges are quite affordable. The downside of the design is that the unit uses a tricolor HP 2540 ink cartridge instead of discrete colors, which could result in more waste over time.
For basic inkjet printing, scanning, and copying, it is hard to beat the low price and excellent wireless features of the HP 2540. Users who do a lot of scanning may want a model with a document feeder, however, and its limited paper capacity makes it a poor fit for busy users.
