It is not very often that a 15 year old machine is still on the market. Even if someone does have an ancient device, the parts that would need to found to keep it running would eventually stop being made and sold. However, it is a different story with the HP Deskjet 1600. This inkjet unit was introduced to the United States in July of 1995 and still to this day is being used in many homes and small offices. Don't forget about the 1600Cn, which offers a 500-sheet paper tray, or the 1600cm which is compatible with all operating systems. The HP 1600 only works with Windows.
There are 4 HP 1600 ink cartridges—black, cyan, yellow and magenta. Chances are users will not be doing much graphic or color printing on this printer. It should be used more for simple text printing which black printer ink. Otherwise, the workload may be too much for such an outdated unit. Replacement Deskjet 1600 ink cartridges are available online, and compatible versions are just as good but can cost less than a third of the OEM cost.
Using color HP 1600 ink, only 4 pages per minute can be printed. These colors also yield a resolution of 300 dpi. The black Deskjet 1600 ink can reach a maximum resolution of 600 dpi and can produce 9 pages per minute. When the printer ink is low, an indicator will blink to let the consumer know that replacements will be needed soon.
This inkjet device is network-ready and offers a parallel port, ethernet connection and optional JetDirect. It comes standard with 4 MB of memory, but that can be upgraded up to 100 MB. Using REt, which is HP's Resolution Enhancement technology, the HP 1600 ink is broken down into tiny dots and placed inch by inch forming excellent quality that will last for years.
