The HP Color LaserJet 2600n is a color laser printer built for small offices who need a network laser printer on a budget. While many laser printers at this price range are designed for personal use, the 2600n sets itself apart with the inclusion of a built-in ethernet port, allowing the printer to be shared over a network to multiple computers without the need for a PC. This makes it an excellent choice for the small office expecting to grow into a larger office. A USB connection is also available, but a cable is not included. Also allowing room to grow is the optional 250-sheet drawer, which can be added onto the included 250-sheet drawer for double the paper capacity for $150.
Print speed is one area where the HP 2600 printer suffers. At 8 pages per minute, it is merely average for a laser printer. This is likely a tradeoff for the low price of the unit, but those on a budget will have to consider whether budget or printing speed are more important for their needs. Print quality is excellent, with extremely sharp text, even in very small fonts. Graphics and color prints are decent, but not spectacular, likely another tradeoff for the price.
HP toner cartridges are in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) configuration. Each color cartridge has a capacity of 2,000 pages, while the black cartridge has a capacity of 2,500 pages. Given HP’s tendency to include “starter” cartridges on some models, it is nice to see the full capacity toner cartridges included. Also, while some HP models do not support Macs, the 2600n is fully compatible with Mac OS 10.2 or later machines.
Overall, the HP Color LaserJet 2600n is a great printer for a small office in the growing stage. It’s expandability and included network interface, as well as its high monthly duty cycle of 35,000 pages, allows it to grow along with the needs of the office, while its low price makes it a great starting point for any office.
