The HP LaserJet 1200 laser printer is designed for the personal or small office user as evident by its low paper and HP toner capacities. It is simple to use and produces excellent quality prints. Print speeds may be too slow for some users.
Although the design of the HP 1200 laser printer is the typical beige box one expects from a personal laser, it does have curved edges and enough modern touches to make it stand out a bit. Good design choices make it simple to replace toner cartridges, reload paper, and access necessary components of the printer with ease. The detailed instruction manual is clear and concise, explaining each procedure very well.
Theunit has enough capacity to handle a small office of users if necessary. Input paper capacity is 250 sheets for its standard paper tray, and output capacity is 150 sheets. A straight-through path is also available for envelopes, thick media, and anything else that doesn't fit the standard paper tray. Unfortunately, paper capacity is not upgradeable, so the machine can not really grow to fit changing needs in the future. A network connection is not included by default, but it can be added as an upgrade. The 1200n model includes networking out of the box, and a 1200se model is also available.
While the unit's print speeds are probably adequate for most personal users, they may be a bit slow for some, especially for a network of shared users. At 10 pages per minute for text and 8 pages per minute for graphics, it comes in a bit slow compared to the competition.
HP LaserJet 1200 toner cartridges have a capacity of 3,500. This is a rather small capacity, but for a personal or small office user the laser toner cartridges will be sufficient. The printer toner cartridge has a very straightforward installation. Simply open up the printer and slide the HP 1200 toner cartridges in. The unit has a good cost per page, especially compared to those of other models, such as HP 3500 toner, which is more expensive per page, despite a larger capacity. When shopping for cartridges, be sure not to confuse them with Lexmark 1200 toner cartridges, as they share a model number.
Print quality is excellent. Text is impressively sharp and defined, and readable at very small font sizes. Graphics and photo quality is average, but certainly workable. Many users might find the 1200's excellent print quality a worthwhile trade for its slower speeds, and that would be completely justified.
