Though the HP OfficeJet Pro 1170 may be a little outdated today, for its time, it was an elite unit unlike any other on the market. Its print speeds, resolution and features may not seem like anything to celebrate nowadays with technology constantly progressing. But when first released, this inkjet unit was ahead of the game. Even now, some homes and small offices are still using this reliable and durable model. Unfortunately, the ink used then is not as strong as more recent ink, such as HP 15 ink.
This machine is quite versatile. The 1170 prints, scans and copies on various types of paper - plain, copier, letterhead, inkjet, premium, glossy and transparency paper are only a few of the compatible options. It is pretty hefty, weighing 32.2 pounds, and its dimensions of 12.8x21.3x17.7 inches make a large footprint.
When using this unit, only two HP 1170 ink cartridges are needed. One is filled with black printer ink and yields 830 pages, and the other holds tricolor OfficeJet Pro 1770 ink that yields 620 pages. These capacities are not bad compared to HP 99 ink. Using the black or color HP 1170 ink cartridges, a resolution of 600x600 dpi can be obtained. Though that may seem relatively low compared to a lot of printers on the market, it still creates high quality documents. It can even scan with a resolution of 1200 dpi.
The speeds are slow, compared to newer models with better ink, such as the Canon CLI-8BK ink. It only prints a maximum of 9 pages per minute using black HP 1170 ink and 5 pages per minute using color. Its copying speeds using color OfficeJet Pro 1770 ink are even slower, copying only three documents per minute. This could definitely slow down the office, and its lack of faxing capabilities will be limiting as well.
Despite being outdated, this unit only receives the highest of reviews. It is reliable, all of its functions work properly and the printer ink is affordable, which makes the HP OfficeJet Pro 1770 a keeper.
