The HP Fax 1040 is a multifunction device that has both fax and copy capabilities. An included phone on this unit makes it quite versatile, allowing offices to communicate and work more efficiently. Its small size and weight of 7 pounds is convenient for any desk that is already overloaded with a PC or printer. This $130-$150 inkjet unit is a good buy for any small business.
Unfortunately, this machine lacks color HP 1040 ink for faxing. The only positive to this is that no color means less HP Fax 1040 ink cartridges to replace. A black HP Fax 1040 ink resolution of 300x300 dpi for faxes is also unimpressive. The black HP 1040 ink resolution for copies is only slightly better at 600x300 dpi. However, a nice feature is that helps make up for low resolution is that HP 1040 ink cartridges are high-yielding. This, added with a good faxing speed of about 6 seconds per page using black HP 1040 ink, makes it a fairly affordable machine to use. The copy speed for this inkjet device is unfortunately not as quick though; only 4 copies using black HP Fax 1040 ink can be made per minute.
The HP 1040 screens caller ID for every fax so unwanted junk documents can be blocked. Although this feature can be very useful, it also causes a slight delay for all of the faxes sent. This unit's average input of 50-sheets and memory of 100-sheets, as well as its automatic document feeder of only 10-sheets, makes it ideal for small businesses.
If HP 1040 printer ink cartridges weren't inexpensive and fax speeds quick, this machine would not be a smart buy. Bad printer ink resolution and slow copy speeds are among the unattractive functions of the HP 1040. The only compatible model the HP Fax 1040 has is the HP 1040xi. The difference between the two is the 1040xi's capacity for a greater memory.
