PictureMate
The Epson PictureMate is a portable 4-by-6 photo inkjet printer. It has a refreshing, unique design that resembles a small boom box with a simple fold-down handle on the top. Epson PictureMate ink cartridges are inexpensive, but small capacities could mean high overall costs. Higher yielding ink may be a better choice, such as HP 564XL Magenta ink, which yields 750 pages.
The fact that this Epson can only print 4-by-6 inch photos might seem to be a big limitation for some, but for a buyer who only wants to accomplish this task, it is a great solution. Further, the unit offers a multitude of connection options, including a PictBridge port for digital cameras, media card slots for memory cards, and its USB port can even connect to an external CD burner for storing captured images on a CD. The convenience of being able to quickly and easily print from practically anywhere will appeal to some. However, this will still be more expensive than most other options due to the low yield of ink, which is not a problem with HP 95 ink.
Epson PictureMate ink cartridges have a fairly small price tag. In fact, when buying directly from the manufacturer, you can buy a pack that includes 100 sheets of paper as well as an Epson PictureMate ink cartridge. The small capacity of Epson PictureMate ink gives the printer ink a very high cost per page, which could be enough to make people look elsewhere, like at the Canon BCI-16C ink.
In their review of the Epson PictureMate inkjet, PC World gave it a rating of 3.5 stars out of 5. They found its print quality to be great and liked its compact design. They disliked the fact that it can't run on batteries and that it is limited to one size of paper, however.
Overall, the Epson PictureMate is a uniquely-designed portable machine that will certainly appeal to those who would rather take the computer out of the equation. Many buyers might find it limited, and its printer ink is fairly expensive.
