When products get discontinued, people tend to forget about them altogether. However, just because buyers can't run into their local electronics store and buy a product doesn't mean it isn't a good unit. Products can get discontinued for an array of reasons. Sometimes it's because a newer product has come out that is just an updated version and sometimes it's because the unit is a little slower or heavier than newer products. Don't let that deter you away from buying a discontinued printer, though. The Epson Stylus Color 850, for instance, may be discontinued, but it is still a quality inkjet product all around.
Inside the unit, buyers will find two Epson 850 ink cartridges. One is filled with black printer ink, while the other houses Stylus Color 850 ink. They have decent page yields of 300 pages and 900 pages for the color and black printer ink, respectively. The black tank will probably last buyers about three times as long as the tricolor tank, which is good because most users will go through the black Epson 850 ink first.
The tricolor Stylus Color 850 ink tank consists of cyan, yellow and magenta ink. Though the price tag isn't too high on any of these, remanufactured versions cost about one fifth of the price. Remanufactured Epson 850 ink tanks will last just as long as the OEM product and offer the same high quality making them a truly great buy all around.
One that that will definitely be a problem for potential buyers is the slow speed the 850 operates at. When printing in only black, only 9 pages per minute can be produced. Documents printed with the color Stylus Color 850 ink will print at even slower speeds of 7 pages per minute. Speeds like this have a potential to leave fast-paced environments waiting. Those who print rarely will have no problem with the speeds though.
