Both printers in the series have a 366 MHz processor and have slightly different memory capacities; the base model has 144 MB total capacity and the 172dn can have up to 160 MB.

The text printing on the Dell 1720 laser printer was flawless in tests; the heavy black text had no signs of fading and graphics printing has been shown to be better than some of the competition. Although there was some cross-hatching in photo images, which is somewhat typical of laser printers.
