With a simple design incorporating two control panel buttons and one LED status light, the Canon S9000 ink and print head are the same as the Canon S900 printer. A wide-carriage printer, the S9000 is targeted at the serious photographers. Print speed is rated at up to 6 pages a minute for black and white and 6 pages a minute for color.
Because of its extra-wide printing capacity, the S9000 has a wider footprint measuring 22.6" by 13.1" deep by 7.7" high. Black and white and color resolution is 2400 dpi by 1200 dpi. The larger capacity allows for media that goes beyond the capacity of a standard printer including A3 and B4 sizes, Ledger B size, legal size and A3 plus size. In addition, it will handle 4" x 6" cards, transparencies, banners and glossy and high-gloss paper. The Canon S9000 ink cartridges can print 49 gradation levels. This means that the Canon S9000 inkjet cartridges are capable of stunning details and reduced grain.
The S9000 will work with Windows XP home edition and professional, Windows 2000, Windows 98/ME and Mac OS 9.x and Mac OS X. Connection is made through USB type B.
When comparing this unit to similar photo printers from Canon, such as the S900, the S9000 can handle larger media and is far easier to use. Though it may lack the versatile connection options of some other devices, this machine's ability to deliver professional-quality photographs from home is worth the extra money upfront. Some review sites disagree, though, such as Photography Review who claims their Canon S9000 inkjet printer had a tempermental print head and paper alignment problems.
For photographers who display their work, the large-format S9000 will be a useful tool. Color printing is fast and quality is exceptional but black and white capabilities are just mediocre.
