CNET Reviews characterized the Canon S820 as a printer equally suited to home or office, designed for "photo enthusiasts and small-business workers." With dimensions of 16.9" W x 11.6" D x 7" H, the S820 features an L-shaped paper path. Canon S820 ink produces good graphics but mediocre text. It lacks a card reader like the S820D. Text speed is slower than the S900 but faster for color prints.
Handles letter, legal, A4, A5, 4" x 6", envelopes and banners. The Canon S820 ink cartridges emit ink through 1,536 nozzles. Canon S820 inkjet cartridges consist of 6 individual ink tanks to reduce waste, part of Canon's Think Tank System.
Compatible with Windows 95/98/2000/ME, Windows NT 4.0, XP, Mac OS (8.6 to 9.x) and Mac OS X v10.1 to 10.2.x. Connection is made through the built-in USB or IEEE 1284 parallel ports.
Included in the software are the printer drivers, PhotoRecord for Windows, ZoomBrowser EX for Windows, ImageBrowser for Mac, PhotoStitch, a Photo Application Guide and Easy-PhotoPrint for Windows.
The Canon S820 inkjet printer can spit out 4" x 6" borderless photos in about 60 seconds.
8" x 10"'s take only twice as long. CNET's editors stated, "based on the 2002 season's crop of printers, inkjet print quality is in a serious slump. Fortunately for our jaded eyes, the Canon S820 photo printer is an exception to this depressing trend." High praise from those who know. CNET found the S820 to be a charitable user of ink. End users tell another tale. Many complain of the print head failing after 1 ½ to 2 years. Many also counter CNET's claim of moderate ink use and claim just the opposite.
At current prices, this would be a good photo printer if purchased new or with a recently replaced print head. Print quality is cited as being very good even by detractors.
