Finding a reliable printer that can provide all of the services a small office requires but also has the ability to print professional-level photos is never an easy task. There are multiple choices on the market, but choosing the best kind for the right price is difficult. The Canon Pixma MX420 is not only affordable, it is also dependable and has proven in testing to be one of the best multi-purpose inkjet printers available. Copying, scanning, faxing and printing excellent photos are the main functions, but other features help elevate the MX420 into a fan favorite.
This inkjet unit is very similar to the MX410, which was released by Canon around the same time, but packs just a few more features that increases the price by about $35. These features include the addition of an ethernet connection and slots designated for direct printing from memory cards. Of course USB and Wi-Fi connections are also included, as well as the PictBridge for direct connection to digital cameras. But the MX420 offers a 2.5 inch LCD screen that will allow users to preview prints without the use of a PC.
The Canon MX420 ink can produce resolutions of up to 4800x1200 dpi using FINE technology. This system of printing uses two Pixma MX420 ink cartridges plus printheads that produce tiny dots of printer ink that blend into an array of intricate color tones. One Canon MX420 ink cartridge is full of black ink, and the other contains cyan, magenta and yellow. There are two different options for replacements—high capacity and standard. The standard capacity Pixma MX420 ink can produce less than 250 pages before expiring, while the high capacity can print more than 350 pages.
Remanufactured Canon MX420 ink tanks are available online for an affordable price, though still maintaining the same capabilities as OEM printer ink. Overall, this compact machine is a reliable choice for any small office user.

The Canon PIXMA MX420 could be the only solution many small office or home office users need, with a variety of features from printing and scanning to copying and faxing. It is rated for ESAT speeds of up to 8.7 pages per minute, and its 30-sheet automatic document feeder is great for quick and efficient scanning. It also has support for wireless sharing.
Start with the printer on, and open the front paper tray to access the main lid. Lift up from the top of the opening of the paper tray and notice a plastic lever will slide into place to prop the top cover up safely.
Wait a moment for the carriage holding the PIXMA MX420 ink cartridges to move to the center, and find the cartridge you need to replace. The black cartridge is under the cover marked B, while the color cartridge is marked C. Pinch the two small handles to unlock the cover and lift it up and out of the way. Grasp the small cartridge handle and pull it out of the slot.
Before you can install your new Canon MX420 ink cartridge, you must take it out of the box, and remove the plastic bag. If it was packaged with a protective tape strip, simply pull to remove it. If it has a plastic cover, you just need to pinch the handles on the top and bottom to remove it.
Now you can simply place the new MX420 ink cartridge into the opening and close the small cover. If you have trouble closing the cover, make sure the cartridge is properly aligned, rather than trying to force it closed.
Close the top of the printer by lifting slightly and pushing the prop lever backward. It will fold up and allow the cover to be lowered gently back into place.
You are now ready to resume printing with your Canon PIXMA MX420 printer.
