The Canon PIXMA MP490 is very compact, especially considering its printing, scanning, and copying capabilities. It features a 1.8-inch LCD screen that folds up and down to conserve space and cover the control panel when not in use. Printing borderless 4x6-inch photos is a snap, and the unit has a fast warmup time of approximately 2 seconds. Memory card slots are included on its front, and it connects to a PC or Mac via USB, but lacks networking capabilities.
Although the model shown differs in color, the replacement process is the same.
Plug in the printer and power it on, if necessary, then start by opening the paper tray. Lift from the top of the paper tray opening to raise the top cover. You will notice a plastic lever sliding forward to lock the cover into place.
The two separate Canon MP490 ink cartridges have their own slots and covers, marked C for color and B for black. Make your choice and squeeze the handles together to lift the cover upward. Grab the cartridge’s handle and pull it out of its opening.
Open the box for your new PIXMA MP490 ink cartridge and carefully remove it from the plastic bag. If your cartridge has a large plastic protector, just pinch the two handles to gently pry it off. If there is a small tape strip, simply pull to remove it.
Place the Canon MP490 ink cartridge into the opening inside the printer and make sure it settles flat before you lower the cover into place. Firmly snap the cover closed, but don’t force it.
To close the top cover, you need to lift it up slightly and press on the lever. The lever will start to slide backward as you lower the cover into place.
You are now ready to resume printing with your Canon PIXMA MP490 printer.
