LC510
The Canon LC510 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the small or medium office environment. It includes all the essential functions an office would need, and better faxing capabilities than the average multifunction device. Its price is higher than some competing units. For simple printing without all the other functions, a model that uses Samsung ML-D1630A toner could be a better option.
The LC510 can print, copy, and fax, but it doesn't have scanning capabilities. It is designed for the office that needs to do a lot of faxing, and only occasional copying, as its main focus is its full-featured fax capabilities.
The unit has a 50-page automatic document feeder for scanning pages automatically, and also a flatbed scanning surface for irregular items like books that can not be fed through the ADF. Scanning resolution is 600 dpi, for sharp copies and faxes. Standalone faxing and copying are supported, as well as PC faxing. The LC510 includes a built-in ethernet network port for connect directly to a network.
The Canon LC510 toner cartridges are easily replaced by opening the front panel. The FX8 cartridge is the one used for Canon LC510 toner, and has a capacity of around 3,500 pages. Models that use Dell 310-8709 toner offer almost double the pages per cartridge. Using third-party compatible cartridges can save a significant amount of money over the more expensive Canon toner cartridges.
The LC510 is a capable copy machine, but its focus is on faxing. Printing is more developed, as the LC510 is a solid laser printer. It also supports network printing and has its own print server, which can be accessed by network users. Print speed is around 15 pages per minute, and is impressive for its class. The 600 dpi printing resolution results in very sharp and defined text and high-quality copies. Graphics and photo printing is average for a laser, but not overly impressive. For impressive graphics, take a look at the Oki 3200 and its Okidata 43034801 toner.
Overall, the Canon LC510 is an excellent fax machine, but its copy and print functions tend to lag behind a bit. Given its high price tag, buyers can find more functionality in other multifunction devices on the market for less money.
