The Canon LC5000 laser fax is designed for the small or medium office environment. Its compact size and affordable price are excellent, but its limited paper capacity, slow transmission speeds, and limited small page memory make it difficult to recommend. A model that uses Lexmark C5240CH toner may be a better option.
The Canon LC5000 laser fax sports a compact frame that will fit well in smaller office spaces. It measures 12 inches by 14.4 inches by 9.5 inches, and weighs only 19 pounds. Its LCD display is very readable, though quite small, as it is only a one-line display. It is enough to relay useful information, however.
The unit can also operate as a basic copier and a basic scanner. Its use for either of these tasks is limited by the lack of a flatbed scanner. Consequently, only documents that can fit through the unit's automatic document feeder can be scanned or copied. Users who need a more robust scanning or copying solution will need to look elsewhere.
The main drawback of the machine is its slow transmission speed. While competing units offer Super G3 speeds up to 33.6 kbps, this model is limited to only 14.4 kbps, which could be a real problem for a busy office.
Canon LC5000 toner cartridges have a capacity of 4,000 pages for each laser toner cartridge. Using the included toner save mode will help users get more from each fax toner cartridge. Toner costs are fairly low, and it has a much lower cost per page than some competitors, like Konica-Minolta 1710587-004 toner.
Print speed is slower than average, at only 6 pages per minute. Print quality is mixed. The unit defaults to only 300 dpi, which results in lower quality prints, but its 600 dpi mode does better, with a sacrifice in speed. For those who need more pages per every cartridge, the Dell 3115cn that features Dell 310-8092 toner is a much better choice.
Overall, the Canon LC5000 is difficult to recommend, as its slow speeds and lackluster quality do not match its competition. Buyers can find much better for the price.
