The Canon L90 is a monochrome laser printer and fax machine designed for the personal or small office user. It offers all the essential fax features and a high-quality laser printer all in one package, offering a great value. For standard printing, the Dell 1320c that uses Dell 310-9060 toner might be a better value.

In the age of email, faxing is becoming less common, and many personal or small office users may have very little need for a fax machine. However, for about the same price as a monochrome laser printer, those users could buy the L90, which is not only a full-featured laser printer, but a full-featured fax machine as well, and its compact size is about the same as a laser printer.

The L90's fax features are more robust than even the average multifunction device. The unit includes a corded handset, which is not common for multifunction machines, and it includes a phone/fax switch for easily switching between the two. It transmits and receives faxes at 33.6 kbps Super G3 speeds, and has a page memory capacity of 346 pages, so you can easily reprint any saved pages from memory when needed. The automatic document feeder allows users to fax up to 30 pages at once automatically.

The Canon L90 is a high-quality laser printer in its own right. Input paper capacity is 100 sheets, and output is 150 sheets. Toner cartridges have a capacity of 2,000 pages each. If more toner is needed per cartridge, check out Samsung CLP-K600A toner.

The printer connects via USB 2.0, and drivers are included for both Windows and Mac platforms. The drivers offer the same features and settings one would expect from any Canon laser printer. Print quality is excellent. Text is sharp and readable, even down to very small font sizes. Graphics quality is about average for a laser printer, but color graphics are not offered like they are with Konica-Minolta A0V30HF toner. Print speed is decent, at around 15 pages per minute.

Overall, the Canon L90 is a good choice for users who need a high-quality laser printer, and have a need for frequent or occasional faxing. For a little more money, users could get a multifunction unit with copying and scanning capabilities.
