The L170 is a full-featured fax machine, with all the functions and features one would expect. It has an automatic document feeder with a capacity of 50 pages for automatically scanning pages. It can store 32 speed dials, and save up to 142 destinations in memory. Multiple fax resolutions are available as well, such as standard, fine, and super-fine. This allows the user to balance speed with quality, as some documents don't need the extra resolution, and can be sent more quickly. Faxing speeds up to 33.6 kbps are possible.

Canon L170 toner is relatively inexpensive. The unit uses a single cartridge with a capacity of 3,500 pages. Canon Faxphone L170 toner is only available in one size, and there is not a high-yield cartridge available. Users will find they can save money by using third-party compatible cartridges instead of branded Canon L170 toner. Canon Faxphone L170 toner cartridges are easy to replace and install.

The L170 is also an excellent printer. Print speed is around 19 pages per minute. Print quality is excellent for text, which is very readable even at small font sizes.
