A great printer for a photographer or aspiring photographer is the Canon i950 Photo Printer. The Canon i950 ink is dispensed through 3,072 nozzles that eject microscopic droplets precisely to create superb prints. Print speed for a borderless 4"x 6" photo is approx. 37 seconds. According to Canon, the i950 can print an 8"x 10" color photo in approximately 1 minute. Dimensions of the i950 are 16.5" W x 10.8" D x 6.3" H.
Maximum resolution is up to 4800 x 1200 dpi for both color and black and white. The i950 uses 6 individual ink tanks to cut costs in case only one needs replacing. Older units had only two tanks, one with black and one like the HP 75XL ink, which has 3 colors in one cartridge. The Canon i950 ink cartridges can print on letter, legal, A4, 4" x 6", 5" x 7", U.S. #10 or European envelopes. The Canon i950 inkjet cartridges are able to print fine details in color prints.
OS capability includes Windows XP, ME, Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Mac OS 8.6 to 9.x and Mac OS X (v 10.1 to 10.2.x). Included software includes Electronic Photo Application Guide, Easy-PhotoPrint, Easy-WebPrint, PhotoRecord, ZoomBrowser EX, ImageBrowser for Mac and PhotoStitch. Connection is made though USB although a cable is not included.
In their review of the Canon i950 inkjet photo printer, CNET cited the i950's speed, sharp output and size as great features of the printer. They found that the i950's interface and documentation both left a lot to be desired. PC Worlds' reviewers called the i950 the fastest photo inkjet printer they had tested to date. PC World also found that the print speed for text documents languished behind the competition. They found some minor fault with gray scale images.
For the amateur photographer who needs a printer capable of printing out high resolution prints, the Canon i950 seems to fit the bill. It's 4800 by 1200 resolution prints accurate colors at lightening fast speed. Though this unit is good for photo printing, businesses looking for a high volume machine would be better choosing a Brother or Phaser, such as the 8500 which uses Xerox 108R00669 ink.
