The Canon D320 is a multifunction laser copier and printer designed for the home or small office user. It has a wide array of features and solid printing speed, but print quality is mixed, and it may be a bit bulky for small offices. Some of these lower-volume offices might want to look at a printer that uses HP Q6003A toner, which has a lower capacity and offers color.
The D320 is billed as a personal digital copier, but it is really more versatile than that label would make one think. It can copy, print, and scan, and performs each of these functions quite well. In fact, it can even be used as a shared printer among multiple network users, though it doesn't have a built-in ethernet port. Only network printing will work, however, as network scanning is not supported.
The D320 is relatively compact, but it is a little larger than some multifunction units. Users with very limited space may find it a bit bulky. The unit measures 17.6 inches by 21.4 inches by 13.7 inches, and weighs 40 pounds. Paper capacity is 260 sheets total, with 250 sheets in the main tray, and 10 sheets in its multipurpose tray.
Setup is easy. Simply unpack the unit, remove packing materials, install the toner cartridge, run the software setup, and connect the USB cable when the software instructs you to do so. The D320 does not include a USB cable, however. Canon D320 toner cartridges are easy to access and easy to replace, as they utilize Canon's single cartridge system. Each Canon D320 toner cartridge has a capacity of 3,500 pages, and is fairly inexpensive, resulting in a low cost per page, lower even than HP CB540A toner.
Print speed is around 12 pages per minute, which is average for the printer's price and class. Print quality is a bit mixed. Text quality is extremely sharp and detailed, and quite impressive. Graphics quality is a little below average, exhibiting some fuzziness and blotchiness in some prints.
Overall, the Canon D320 is an impressive multifunction device, with solid speed and a good feature set. Its graphics quality may be an issue for users who print a lot of graphics. For these users, a high-volume color unit might be more suitable, such as models that use HP CE252A toner.
