Portability is a key feature of the Canon BJC-85 bubble-jet printer. Dimensions are a compact 12" by 6" and 2" thick. With the addition of an optional color image scanner cartridge, the BJC-85 transforms to a portable color scanner. Print speed is compromised by portability though. The Canon BJC-85 ink cartridges deliver five pages a minute for black and white according to the manufacturer, but reviewers report 2.7 as a more realistic figure. For faster and higher-quality results, the Phaser 8400 printer which uses Xerox 108R00605 ink will be better.
At a light four and a half pounds, even with the optional battery, the BJC-85 is a good bet for printing on business trips. Combined with the printers' infrared communication port, the BJC-85 can travel without cables and communicate with a mobile phone or notebook that is close by. The Canon BJC-85 ink cartridges print at two pages per minute. A variety of media can be fed through the printer including envelopes, plain and bubble jet papers, transparencies, t-shirt transfers and greeting cards. The Canon BJC-85 Bubble Jet cartridges are also capable of a maximum resolution of 720 x 360 dpi, which is a bit less than HP 98 ink.
Compatible with both PC's and Mac's, connection is made through parallel or built-in USB ports. Works with older operating systems including Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0 and Mac OS 8.1 or later versions. Canon supplies the drivers on CD-ROM and a universal power adapter with the printer.
A slow printing speed and mediocre print quality may overweigh the convenience of the BJC-85 and push consumers to look at competing models that feature Epson T5846 ink. There is no networking interface or expansion slots. The Canon BJC-85 Bubble Jet printer does convert to a 360-dpi, 8-bit color scanner.
If a portable printer that converts to a scanner is a business tool that belongs in your toolbox, the BJC-85 may be a printer to consider. If quality printing is also essential, it may miss the mark. The wireless communication capability and light weight are both appealing plusses.
