The Canon BJ-200 is a personal inkjet printer that improves on its predecessor (the BJ-100) with twice the media capacity, but offers the same slow speeds of up to 5 pages per minute. It also suffers from the same lackluster output quality, while losing some of the compact size that made the previous model appealing.
The design of the BJ-200 is still quite compact, of course. It measures 6.8x13.7x7.6 inches, and its weight of 6.6 pounds includes the Canon BJ-200 printer ink supplies as well. It includes a 100-sheet paper tray, which could be appealing to users who found the previous model's 50-sheet tray too small. It supports alternative media like transparencies, and can handle media up to 8.5x14 inches in size.
The printer's output quality is a point of concern, though, as it offers a maximum resolution of only 720x300 dpi. This puts high-quality photo printing out of reach, and relegates it to mostly basic text documents and graphics. It also suffers from a lack of connection options, including only an outdated parallel port, which will require an adapter for modern USB-equipped PCs. Support is limited to Windows machines, so Mac users will be left out of for this model.
The use of a combined Canon BJ-200 ink cartridge for color is a bit disappointing, as it will result in wasted printer ink. Still, replacing the Canon BJ-200 ink cartridges is quite simple. The availability of remanufactured Canon BJ-200 ink could help users save a bit of money over using OEM supplies.
The Canon BJ-200 is a capable machine for basic home use, but it lacks some of the features and connection options common in newer inkjet models. Its low purchase price could be appealing, but its overall lack of speed and output quality makes it hard to recommend.
