If the Canon FaxPhone B170 had a little faster faxing speed, it would be a much more appealing inkjet fax machine. As it stands, its compact design and affordable purchase price still give it a bit of appeal, and the low cost of FaxPhone B170 printer ink also helps quite a bit. If buyers don't mind a bit of waiting for multi-page faxes, it might be worth the tradeoff.
Ideal for a home office, the B170 is 6 inches tall when folded up, and has a footprint of 17.3x13 inches. It weighs a little less than 16 pounds, even with the Canon B170 printer ink supply installed. The control panel is fairly detailed for such a small device, with a full keypad and a number of one-touch speed dial buttons for quick access to common numbers.
The main downside to the B170 is slow transmission speeds, as it sends and receives pages in about 18 seconds. This adds up to quite a bit of waiting, and probably won't be very convenient for users who do a lot of faxing.
With a phone handset on its left side, the unit also functions as a phone and answering system, able to record and play back messages. This is a nice feature, and will probably mean that home office users don't need a separate phone system.
The unit uses a single black Canon B170 ink cartridge, which is actually quite affordable to replace. The FaxPhone B170 ink cartridge also has a solid yield of up to 450 pages, so it lasts for a long time and is cost effective. Users who want to save even more should consider using remanufactured Canon B170 ink instead of OEM supplies.
The Canon B170 is not a good fax machine for a small office, as its limited speed and inkjet supply prices won't be a good fit for larger volumes. For the home office user, however, it might be just the right combination of compact design and affordability.
