The Brother MFC-9840 color laser printer with multifunction features is designed for the small office environment, like the HP M2727 toner printer. It features wireless networking and excellent implementation of its features at an affordable price.
The main feature that sets the Brother MFC-9840 color laser printer, also referred to as the MFC-9840cdw, apart from similar models in the lineup is its included wireless networking. The machine supports 802.11b/g wireless, and can either be integrated into an existing wireless network, by connecting it wirelessly to a router, or it can act as a standalone print server, which users can connect to directly for printing. Wireless networking is becoming increasingly common in office environments, and usually appeals to small offices especially, which may not have the resources to install and maintain an entire ethernet network.
The Brother MFC-9840 toner cartridges have a capacity of 2,500 pages for black and 1,500 for each color laser toner cartridge. There are also printer toner cartridges available in high yield which have capacities of 5,000 for black and 4,000 for each color cartridge. The high-yield toner cartridges are a much more economical option and can result in significant savings over the life of the machine.
The scanner is particularly well-designed and is virtually identical to the one in the Brother MFC-9420 toner printer. It is capable of scanning at resolutions up to 2400 dpi and a color bit-depth of 24-bit. Users are able to send scans to a variety of locations including email, OCR (optical character recognition), file (to a hard drive), and even a local or remote FTP server. Scanning is quite fast, resulting in fast scans, copies, and faxes.
Faxing is full-featured as well. The unit can store 390 locations in memory, and it has a fax page memory of up to 500 pages for storing incoming faxes in case of power outages or other problems. Maximum copy speed is around 17 pages per minute. A few convenience features like duplex copying and printing, and N-up copying and printing, round out the feature set.
Print speed is quite good, at around 17 pages per minute in both color and monochrome. Print quality is excellent. Copies and prints are both very sharp and defined. Even color copies and prints are very impressive, usually a challenge for a laser model.
