The Brother MFC-9440 is a color laser printer with multifunction capabilities, designed for the small to medium office environment. If you need a multfunction printer designed more for small business, the HP M2727 toner printer should be considered. Excellent implementation of every feature makes for a very easy-to-use machine.
The multifunction capabilities of the MFC-9440 include printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. It has the ability to handle virtually any task you throw at it, and each feature is implemented extremely well, and accessed in an intuitive way. The design of the unit is not as compact as some multifunction devices, but the extra size gives it some breathing, allowing for a larger control panel, and thus, easier access to its many features.
The MFC-9440 features both a flatbed scanning surface and an automatic document feeder, with a capacity of 35 pages, either of which can be used for scanning, copying, and faxing. Functionality and features are very similar to the slightly less expensive Brother MFC-9420 toner printer model. Strangely, though the flatbed surface can only scan sizes up to A4, the ADF can actually scan up to legal size. It seems a bit backwards, but it works. The control panel is nicely laid out, with just enough buttons to provide functionality, but not so many as to be overwhelming. The panel also includes a full keypad for faxing. A two-line LCD screen provides the necessary information for the user.
The Brother MFC-9440 toner cartridges have a capacity of 2,500 for black and 1,500 for each color cartridge. High-yield cartridges double the black capacity to 5,000 pages, and more than double the color cartridges to 4,000 pages. Using the high-yield Brother MFC-9440 toner cartridges will result in a significant savings over the life of the machine.
Print speed is around 16 pages per minute for monochrome prints, and 15 pages per minute for color. Scanning times are also fast, resulting in fast copies and scans. Print quality is excellent, especially for text. Color prints are better than average for a laser and are generally impressive.
