The machine includes both a flatbed scanner and a 35-page automatic document feeder for quickly scanning, faxing, or copying multiple pages easily. Scans can be sent to email, a networked computer, or an FTP server, making it very convenient.

Ethernet networking is built-in, and setting it up on a network is quick and easy. The unit can also connect via USB if desired. Paper capacity is good for the price, at 250 sheets, and there is also a single-sheet manual slot for alternate media.

Each color laser toner cartridge has a page yield of 1,400 pages, and the single black printer toner cartridge has a page yield of 2,200 pages. The small capacity of Brother MFC-9120CN toner cartridges gives it a fairly high cost per page when compared to competing models. This makes its cost of ownership higher.

Print speed is very fast, especially for the price. Color and monochrome both print at up to 17 pages per minute. Print quality is excellent. Text is very sharp and defined, and color prints are about average for its class.
