For a basic multifunction laser printer, the Brother MFC-4800 is hard to beat. It has all the essential functions of printing, scanning, faxing and copying, without the high price of other multifunction devices like the Canon MF4150 toner printer. Print speed is solid, at 10 pages per minute, and Brother MFC-4800 toner is very affordable.
The Brother MFC-4800 has the look of a dedicated fax machine, especially with its prominent numeric keypad and phone handset, but it is also a very capable printer. Faxing is limited to 14.4 kbps, but this is probably fast enough for its target market. Paper capacity is 200 sheets, and the fax function has 2 MB of memory to save incoming faxes in the event that it runs out of paper. Scanning and copying is limited by the lack of a flatbed scanning surface, meaning that only media that can go through its feeder can be scanned. The 20-page automatic document feeder does an excellent job of quickly scanning many pages at once, however.
The single black Brother MFC-4800 toner cartridge has a capacity of 2,200 pages. Unfortunately, the "starter" Brother MFC-4800 toner cartridge included with the machine only has a capacity of 1,000 pages, so it will need to be replaced early. Toners are easy to replace, and the affordable price of printer toner for this model makes it easy on the wallet. If wanting to print in color, try the Brother MFC-9420 toner printer.
In a review of the Brother MFC-4800 laser printer, Cnet praised its sharp print quality and its low upfront price. They disliked its poor scan and copy quality and wished for a network upgrade option. They gave it a rating of 3 out of 5 stars, which means it loses to the LaserJet 2300 toner printer.
