The Brother MFC-3200 is a fax machine built for small offices. It has the ability to perform multiple functions—meaning it can copy, scan and fax as well as print. A color inkjet machine, it weighs in at only 14.3 pounds, and it has a very small size of only 19.1x13.5x8.5 inches. Upon purchase, 8 MB of memory is built in and unfortunately this cannot be upgraded. Besides the lack of expandability, the biggest problem all around with this inkjet printer has to be its slower-than-average speeds.
When copying, this unit is a slug producing only 7 pages per minute for black-and-white prints and 4 pages per minute for color. High resolutions of 1200x1200 dpi are reached, though, which will almost make up for those speeds. Up to 99 copies can be made from each original document, and reductions and enlargements from 25% to 400% When printing, its speeds aren't much better at 10 pages per minute using only black Brother MFC-3200 ink and 7 pages per minute using color printer ink. Resolutions as high as 2400x1200 dpi can be reached.
The scanner is decent with an 8-bit grayscale depth and the ability to reach optical resolutions of 2400x1200 dpi, but its faxing abilities are where this unit really stands out. Maximum transmission speeds of up to 33.6 Kbps will send and receive faxes in around 3 seconds, and a total of 480 pages can be stored into the memory. Delayed fax transmission, PC faxing and remote fax retrieval are all offered, as well as 158 broadcast transmission statements.
Because it's a color fax machine, cyan, magenta, yellow and black Brother MFC-3200 ink cartridges are needed for operation. These tanks of printer ink can be purchased remanufactured from third party vendors or new from the manufacturer. Remanufactured Brother MFC-3200 ink cartridges costs a fraction of the price of OEM but provide the same quality and capacity.
