The Brother HL-2070N is a monochrome laser printer designed for the small networked office environment. It produces high-quality text prints and has solid print speeds, but its low capacities make it best-suited for small workgroups only. It also will be a lot more affordable to maintain then some competing models.
The HL-2070N is a very compact laser printer. It not only has a small footprint, but it measures only 6.5 inches high, taking up very little vertical space as well. It includes USB and ethernet ports, allowing it to be easily shared across a network of users.
While the HL-2070N is meant to be a network printer, its small capacities will become a problem if it is shared among too many users. Therefore, it is not recommended for an office that expects to expand in the future. Its input paper capacity is 250 sheets, and no options are available to expand this capacity, nor can its 16 MB of memory be upgraded in the future. The 250-sheet paper drawer is an actual drawer, somewhat rare for a printer at this price point, and a manual slot is included for feeding other types of media, though they have to be fed one sheet at a time, which could become annoying if needed often.
This is not to say that the HL-2070N won't make a small network of users very happy. Its fast print speeds of 16 pages per minute are particularly impressive. Print quality is also excellent, with sharp, defined text as the highlight, and decent graphics print quality.
The HL-2070N includes a starter toner cartridge with a capacity of only 1,500 pages. This is particularly disappointing for a networked printer, as a small network will consume the starter cartridge quickly. The replacement toner capacity is 2,500 pages, so later replacements will be less frequent.
Overall, the Brother HL-2070N is a solid small office printer provided the shared network of users is small. Offices anticipating growth may want to look for a printer with more expandability for the future.
