The Brother DCP-1400 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. It has fast printing speeds and excellent scanning quality, but it has no faxing capabilities.
The Brother DCP-1400 is a very versatile machine. It can print, scan, and copy, though it does lack a fax function. Many users in its target market may not miss the ability to fax, however, as it is becoming less of a necessity in the small office, which is why the basic HP 1320 toner printer is so popular. Each of the DCP-1400's functions is very well-designed, and easily accessed, as an array of buttons offers quick access to nearly every important function.
The machine has a 50-page automatic document feeder and a flatbed scanning surface. This allows users to quickly scan multiple pages, but also allows for scanning documents that can't be fed through the ADF. Scanning quality is excellent, as the DCP-1400 can scan at up to 2400 dpi optical resolution, and 9600 dpi interpolated resolution, which enhances images for more clarity. The unit can also scan in full-color, despite the fact that the printer is monochrome only.
Brother DCP-1400 toner cartridges are relatively inexpensive, and have a standard capacity of 3,000 pages. High-yield laser toner cartridges have a capacity of 6,000 pages. When using high-yield cartridges, users pay less per page for Brother DCP-1400 toner, and therefore save a lot of money over the long run.
As a printer, the DCP-1400 is very impressive. It has a print speed of up to 15 pages per minute, and copies print at up to the same pace. Print quality is excellent, with extremely sharp and detailed text characters even at small font sizes. Graphics quality is average for a laser, but still generally very good. For color graphics, look at the Brother HL-4040 toner printer.
Overall, the Brother DCP-1400 offers a good mix of features, all of which are easy to access and to use. Lack of faxing may be an issue for a small number of users, but the DCP-1400 is a great choice for a home or small office.
